Facebook, Twitter, Formspring, MSN. Creative ideas and big revolutions, which have become so popular in our generation that is rare to know someone who does not have an account in one of these. The fact is they all induce you to sell an image and promote your own life and personality to other people; which can be a good or a bad thing. Good because the good things you learn or live can be easily seen by people who you would like to reach, but a problem can rise when it becomes something out of your control.
I did not used to see, but now I realize that it is very common to see people around me who excessively appreciate the fact of being seen and recognized. So they end up doing almost everything with the intention of being noticed and praised. They do things always with the intention of receiving applause by the spectacle they make of their own lives. The problem is that when this happens, the person may come to depend on people watching him, and when there are no admirers in his audience, a certain desperation takes hold. Living in a way that our attitudes do not have the intention of bringing self-satisfaction reveals a certain identity crisis, because there will be a void when you look at yourself and try to understand why you are doing certain things and where is your essence.
In addition, our true character is revealed in the dark, away from the gaze of others, where we prove to ourselves who we really are. We need to look inside ourselves and recognize the values and principles that are noble enough to bring value to ourselves, because as we value ourselves we start to respect ourselves. After we have done that, we demand those who are around to respect us. We cannot require reverence of others when we do not recognize the value we have. The nobility inside is the seed for the harvest of respect outside.
So may we live on the stage of life as protagonists of our own existence. But may we clean our faces, being ever faithful and honest in front of the audience who will be with us for the rest of our lives: ourselves.
